Filson Tin Cloth® and other oil-finish fabrics are built to withstand years of hard use, but exposure to rain, mud, abrasion, and time gradually wears down the fabric’s protective wax finish.

Periodic rewaxing restores water resistance, helps extend the life of the garment, and preserves the character that waxed jackets develop through years in the field. With the right materials and technique, rewaxing a Filson jacket can be completed at home in under an hour.

Why should you rewax a waxed jacket?

Rain, snow, mud, and general wear gradually reduce the water resistance of waxed cotton. Periodic rewaxing helps restore weather resistance and extends the life of the fabric by keeping it protected and conditioned.

How often should you rewax a Filson Tin Cloth® jacket?

Rewaxing frequency depends on use and exposure to the elements. Jackets used regularly in rain, snow, mud, or abrasive conditions may require more frequent rewaxing. Under typical use, rewaxing every two years is recommended.

Signs that it’s time to rewax your jacket include:

  • water no longer beading on the surface
  • dry or lighter-colored areas in the fabric
  • increased moisture absorption

What wax should you use on a Filson waxed jacket?

Filson Original Oil Finish Wax is specifically designed for Filson's proprietary Tin Cloth® products.

Other waxes, including beeswax-based formulas, may not properly bond with the existing oil finish. This can reduce water resistance, durability, and overall performance.

Can you relax a Filson jacket yourself?

Yes. With the proper supplies and heat source, rewaxing a Filson waxed jacket can be done at home in under an hour.

Can I use a hair dryer instead of a heat gun?

Yes. A hair dryer can be used to melt the wax into the fabric, though it may take longer than a heat gun due to lower heat output.

What happens if you apply too much wax?

If too much wax is applied, excess wax may remain on the surface instead of absorbing into the fabric. Applying additional heat and wiping with a clean cloth can help redistribute or remove excess wax.

Step-by-step guide

1. Prepare Your Workspace

Lay the garment flat on a clean work surface protected by an old towel or blanket. Rewaxing can be messy, and a large flat surface provides room to work the wax evenly across the fabric.

2. Clean the Garment

Before applying wax, remove all dirt and debris from the jacket. Wet mud should be rinsed off with cold water and allowed to dry completely. Once dry, use a stiff nylon-bristle brush to remove dirt, sawdust, and debris from the fabric, paying close attention to seams, pockets, and creases where buildup can collect.

Do not machine wash or dry clean waxed garments prior to rewaxing.

3. Apply Wax Evenly

Working at room temperature, apply Filson Original Oil Finish Wax evenly across the fabric surface. Applying small amounts at a time helps create a more consistent finish and prevents wax buildup.

A simple technique is to place small dots of wax roughly an inch apart, then work them into the fabric using circular motions until evenly distributed.

Pay extra attention to high-wear areas such as shoulders, cuffs, elbows, seams, and pocket edges.

4. Melt the Wax Into the Fabric

Using a heat gun on a medium setting or a hot hair dryer, apply heat in slow, consistent motions approximately 6–8 inches from the fabric. Continue heating until the wax liquefies and fully absorbs into the garment.

The goal is to melt the wax into the fabric, not leave it sitting on the surface.

If rewaxing outdoors on a hot day, the garment can also be left in direct sunlight for several hours to gradually absorb the wax into the fabric.

5. Allow the Garment to Cure

Once the wax has been fully absorbed, allow the garment to rest and cool before wearing or storing. Inspect the surface for uneven areas, dry spots, or excess wax buildup.

If needed, apply additional heat to redistribute wax evenly across the fabric.

For best results, re-wax your garment at least every two years under normal use. Hard use such as working in mud or having the garment in heavy rains often will require more frequent re-waxing.

Rewaxing Tips and Tricks

  • Apply wax at room temperature for more even distribution. Start with light coats. Additional wax can always be added as needed.
  • If a heat gun is unavailable, a metal-surface iron can be used to melt wax into the fabric. This iron should not be used for other household purposes.
  • If neither a heat gun nor iron is available, the garment can be hung near a wood-burning stove or heater to gradually warm the fabric. The garment should never become too hot to comfortably touch.
  • Applying heat gradually helps maintain the fabric’s pliability and can produce a softer finish by reducing excessive oil evaporation during rewaxing.
